I'm Back

After a long hiatus, I'm bringing the Hangar back again. Lots of reasons for the lengthy the break between posts, the main one being that I just got burned out of writing it. I was doing the Day Job, which involved me writing all day, then coming home and spending 2 hours a post on Hangar material just took my ass out.

The other reason was the now-deceased 2008-9 Washington Capitals. Through the first 4 games of the Rangers series, the Caps were playing shitty. After a wholly frustrating Game 4 loss, I was far too pissed off to make a sensible argument about the game. At least not without sounding like some lunatic. Like a scary, Judge-of-the-Nazi-People's Court kind of lunatic. Plus, I was doing the hockey tournament that weekend and I was expecting the worst. So what happened? The Caps won Game 5. I didn't blog about it. The Caps won Game 6. Being someone who firmly believes in karma, juju, superstitions and all that junk, I attributed the Caps winning to my not blogging. It was true for about 5 games, all Caps wins. By the time the Pittsburgh series started going downhill I was firmly out of the routine of posting here. Let me tell you, 3/4 of all writing is routine. Ideas are one thing, style is one thing, but without a routine, nothing happens. Alas, as they say in AA, my routine had become a bit unmanageable and the Caps were driving me off the deep end with the constant elimination games.

But, I am back and will try to do this at a more manageable pace than I did before. Updates may come fast, they may not but I will try to keep shit up. For me, the Hangar is always evolving depending on my whims and flights of fancy. So for about the third time, I'll be switching up how I do this thing. Whatever the case, enjoy bitches.

Today's YouTube Clip To Swing Your Heavy Metal Hair To

If there is one frequently asked question about this blog, it is "How did you come up with the name Hangar 39?" Well, today is your lucky day because I'm going to provide the answer. Granted, I've told three of The Five what it is, but for those that may have stumbled upon this on their travels down the series of tubes that is the information superhighway, here's the scoop. The 39 comes from two sources: one, it was my hockey number at one point. I wore it in honor of one of my favorite players as a kid, Doug Gilmour. Gilmour, who was nicknamed "Killer," wore #39 when he played for the Calgary Flames and when I took the number, there weren't many players out there that had it.

The second comes from this song, which I was listening to when I was thinking of a blog name. It's "Hangar 18" by Megadeth. Now besides the fact that it's a kickass jam, it also comes complete with one of the most ridiculous metal videos ever made (this might have to be a separate post). The video has Megadeth surrounded by Vic Rattlehead and a bunch of Muppets that are supposed to be aliens. One of the aliens, I swear, looks like the creature from "Mac And Me."

So with that, enjoy the heaviness and the unintentional comedy that is "Hangar 18."

We're Back/Today's YouTube Clip To Swing Your Heavy Metal Hair To

As a child of the late 80s/early 90s baseball card boom, I was a voracious reader of Beckett Baseball Card Monthly. It was always a very satisfying sight to look at Beckett and see that my Frank Thomas 1990 Leaf rookie card was worth $100. One of my favorite Beckett issues was the one from, I think, around 1991-92. Bo Jackson, still for my money the best all-around athlete I've ever seen, was coming back to baseball after missing a year due to a hip injury. For those that don't remember Bo, he was a sight to behold. Now, he's more famous for his prowess at the old Techmo Bowl game than anything else, but Bo really was that damn good. He was also one of the first huge crossover athletes (along with Michael Jordan) that became a marketing phenom. Remember the old "Bo Knows" ads?

...anyway, coming to the point. When Bo came back to baseball, Beckett ran this very clever shot of the back of Bo Jackson's jersey with the line "Bo's Back" underneath it. I always loved that shot but alas, it does not live on in Google images, so this old Nike poster will have to do.

So we are back to the business of being Hangar 39 and I'll have at least 2 posts up for you later today, one of which will involve the 25th anniversary of the Baltimore Colts move to Indianapolis.

For now, enjoy your YouTube Clip To Swing Your Heavy Metal Hair To, which is a beauty. It's Metallica covering "The Ecstasy of Gold" from the film "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly." This has long been their entrance music and the video works very well because whoever did it laid the Metallica version of the track over where the original Enrico Morricone version appears in the film. Enjoy fools.

The old Hangar is closing up shop for the weekend to allow me to play in the Tom Farrell Invitational Beerfest, I mean, Hockey Tournament. But we'll be back Bennett, with a slew of posts next week. Have a nice weekend!

Our 100th Post!!!

Well looky what we have here, my little baby is all growns up. In the span of a month and a half, the Hangar has gone from this...

...to this...

And what would be a 100th post celebration without the one, the only, Willard Scott.

"Well, thank you there, let's wish a happy 100th birthday to Hangar 39! Please help me, I've been kidnapped. There's things here in this Hangar that I've seen that you can't unsee. We gotta stop 'em! They're going to kill us all! Tell the presi..."

Ok, thank you very much Willard. Let's just put this here ball-gag back in your mouth to get you to stop talking for a while. Snitches get stitches you know. Anyway, let's blow out the candles on the cake and toast to the next 100 posts shall we?

The first step towards World Domination...

We're on Google now! We're on Google now! I'm somebody! Look, it says right there. Hangar! 39! Now I know how Navin Johnson felt when the new phone book showed up.

The best part of it is the fact that this blog is the first thing that comes up when you enter in "Hangar 39." 'Cause if you ain't first, you're last!
